Help buy car for 19 yr old college student?

My 19 yr old nephew will be off to first year of college next fall.

He desperately needs reliable and economical transportation as he will be in college abt 4 hrs away.

What vehicle.... model and brand....would be a good bet for him to buy? We are thinking brand new vs used....so that he will have a warranty and can fully concentrate on his studies at school (he wants to become dentist) ... and not have to worry abt a used car and breakdowns. But we are on a budget.

he has worked hard and has a good savings.... plus his family (uncles, parents) will help him with cost a new car as well.

We need something that will help keep his insurance costs low as he is in that high risk "bracket" at his age level.

Advice?

One car comes to mind.

A Volvo 240 Wagon. It can haul stuff, is dead-simple, easy and inexpensive to fix, and actually quite safe.

$3000-$4000 should get a mint condition low mileage 1990-1993 model. Stick preferred, of course. Turbo not so much as a first car(pricey to fix the unit if it fails and much faster than a 19yr old should drive)

Kia Rio is the lowest priced production vehicle in America (last time I looked). It has the best warranty; I own one of the first ones brought into this country. I get 35 mpg city, 40 mpg highway ($2.00/gal gas coming????). My Rio has 93,000 miles on it; It uses absolutely no oil; the oil is very clean even after 5,000 miles when I replace it. I use the cheapest oil I can find, too; not synthetic. I have a 5 speed trans. with original clutch, PP, bearings, etc.

I have replaced the alternator and the thermostat (brake pads, belts, etc. all still original). If your nephew is going to a university, I would assume that any university town would have a Kia/Hyundai dealer for service and/or repairs.

You can buy this car w/ A/C and a 5 speed for a very reasonable price; under $10,000 with rebates and dealer discounts. Try kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) to price one and make queries online.
