Disco advice

Hi, first time here and looking for some advice on a Disco we own that is currently SORN but has an interesting history.

According to Land Rover it came off the production line on 25/4/90 and was approximately the 20th V8 to be built. It was first registered by Land Rover in May 1990, about six months prior to the public launch, and was seconded to Land Rover?s press and demonstration fleet where it was available to journalists etc (so it may be pictured in some of the magazines and papers of the day). We bought it in about '93 and have had it since. It was running at the time it was SORN but needed some welding work for the MOT. Otherwise its in reasonably good condition for its age. It also has the vanity plate D15COU although it was originally on a G plate (G513 DHP)

The question is it likely to be something an enthusiast would be interested in taking on and restoring for its history or is it just another ageing Disco to be put in the local paper?

Tony, I think your information on the history of this vehicle may be a=20 bit awry. I'm not saying you're wrong but Discovery was launched at the=20 Geneva motor show in 1989 - prior to your motor being manufactured - and =

AFAIK all of the press fleet were registered G---WAC. Certainly all of=20 the vehicles pictured in the press pack I have from that time are WAC.=20 That's not to say it wasn't re-registered from a WAC to your DHP, of=20 course, but it's unlikely.

I think you would need to check your ideas with the Motor Heritage=20 Centre at Gaydon. I'd like to think you've got it right :-)

I've taken the liberty of emailing your post to a Land Rover journalist=20 that I know. If he comes back with anything I'll post it here.

Sorry, yes this is the five door model which was launched in 1990 and not the three door launched in 1989. The information I have on it comes from Land Rover itself in Solihull.

Ah-so, Grasshopper :-)

Unfortunately, even though you're right about it's provenance I think=20 you'll find it's not worth any more than any other 17 year old=20 Discovery. Even the original press vehicles aren't rare enough to be of=20 additional value or interest.

Thanks - in which case I'll get it back just enough to tranfer and sell the plate and then give it to a local guy whose keen to have it as a workhorse. I didn't want to do that and then find I'd done something unspeakable to a bit of legacy.

Tony Raven uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Don't worry , if you did you'd be in good company :-)

The look on the rivet counters face is almost worth it come to think of it on reflection.

Perhaps a post on the Discovery Owners Club Forum might be worthwhile :)
