Discovery whine Mk2

Help please. I've got a transmission whine that resonates in cab at 60 mph

but when towing caravan is loud from 55 to 65.

If anyone knows a cure other than earplugs I'd be grateful or is this a standard feature.

OK.

  1. Left the wife at home
  2. Changed the fan belt & tensioner

but whine still there note only on power. On overrun whine disappears. Is this likely to be a gear problem?

Who sells earplugs? (It's loud & I'm getting worried)

John,

I sympathise. Transmission noise is very annoying, especially in a 'new' car. Is yours still under warranty? I had the box in my SII Disco replaced three times under warranty to get rid of transmission noise (a whine in the first one and a whistle in the second).

John Hi,

I guess your transfer box's gears must be making the LR characteristic whining noise. On both my Discos (1993 and 1994 model years) the tricks that had assisted into getting rid of most of the whining noise were:

  1. On the 1993 model year the complete transfer box assembly was replaced with a Range Rover Classic viscous coupling chain driven one when the manual box was also replaced with a RaRo 300Tdi autobox one. This way the whining noise from both the manual gearbox and the Disco transfer box has completely disappeared. A radical solution but on the expensive side I guess.

  1. On the 1994 model year Disco (which was bought on 2000 with 20.000 km and was put on the road on 2001 after sitting idle for more than 6 years but having done the 1994 Camel Trophy in the hands of the Greek team) the only thing that I did was to replace the EP90 gear oil with fully synthetic GL5

75/90 one. This had made a dramatic difference in noise reduction and the car felt somehow more free rolling. Amazing it may also sound but I also noted a small decrease in fuel consumption. On the same time the ATF 2 on the manual gearbox was also changed with ATF
  1. I am now considering upgrading from ordinary EP90 to fully synthetic GL5
75/90 for the front and rear diffs also.

Take care and hope this helps Pantelis

This sounds like good advice. Now I'm at 48000 miles and a full service is due I guess I'll go with your suggestion on the oil. Replacing the xfer box is too radical a solution for me! - and I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks. John

John I hope your Tbox does not sound as noisy after that.
