Dead 3.5 EFi - ignition troubles - help

Hi all

In deepest Wales and the Range Ruster has died on me - it's a 1989 3.5 EFi and the problems seesm to be ignition related.

Plenty of juice in the battery and petrol getting to the engine, no spark at the plugs or at the end of HT lead from coil - have changed the HT lead for a known good one - still no spark.

Power and earth to coil look good. I have ran through the Haynes BoL section about ignition faults on the EFi and it has a part in there which states that with the ignition off there should be no voltage reading between the POSITIVE battery terminal and the NEGATIVE on the coil.

I am getting full 12 volts reading.

Haynes says this means teh amplifier module on the dizzy is shagged - anybody else got an opinion on this and has anybody got the parts number for the amp and also a new coil??

if you want to try it I have a old (working ) amplifier with a damaged cover you can have it for free. they are inexpensive anyway I paid just over £20 for the new pattern one . If you want to check your coil just put a live feed to one terminal and flash the other side to earth ( fasten a wire to the innerwing and dab it to the other terminal) it will do no harm provided you don't linger if its sound you should get a cracking sound as the spark earths and a fair shock if you have your fingers in the way. The car has two feeds to the coil one goes through the ballast resistor (in the earlier model resistive wiring is used) and the other which comes from the normally none live side of the starter to give an increased spark when the starter is engaged its not a bad idea to check the wire from the resistor to the terminal block at they are prone to breakage. I located a new coil locally but that did not help - may not have been the correct one though, Craddocks will (hopefully) have a genuine coil here tomorrow and I have located an amplifier in Swansea (only two hours away!!)

However there is a local breakers that may prove fruitful for the Metro cheat - marvellous how you can have a happy holiday stressing over how you are going to get home - currently a hire car is looking good!

I also get to drive and tow with a Diahastu (sp??) Fourtrak in the meantime - needs must but it is very agricultural

On or around 21 Aug 2003 10:52:47 -0700, snipped-for-privacy@TALK21.COM (Graeme) enlightened us thusly:

Mine's running apparently happily on an "electronic" coil from a Ford Sierra... Standard 12V coil tends to give misfires, but not total deadness.

where in Wales are you? There's a Lucas shop in Aberystwyth...

Hi Del

Thanks for the offer but I am sorted now. The amplifier was dead but I was unable to obtain one at all in Pembrokeshire on Friday and was looking at hiring a car to get home and then return the following week and pick up Range Ruster, trailer and horses. However the local Main Dealer - Greens - at Haverfordwest came up trumps with an amplifier out of their workshops and got me running again.

Looks like the Haynes BoL was correct after all
