Engine stuttering when fuel tank half full or less.

SWB SeriesIII 2.25 Petrol

When I have less than half a tank of petrol the engine does not run well. I would describe the symptoms as 'struggling for fuel' even under light load. If I then limp into a petrol station and fill up all is fine - until the next time. This would suggest to me that the pipe that picks up the fuel (in that mesh gauze thing inside the tank) perhaps doesn't go all the way to the bottom. Is this a known problem and is the fix simply a new part?

Background: I have observed this over several tanks of fuel and it happens consistently. Having recently changed the fuel tank I can confirm that the fuel gauge reads correctly.

Suspicious? did you fit the pickup pipe/filter gauze so it went all the way to the bottom?

Could be any sort of partial blockage, or maybe a failing lift pump.

Yes, the gauze certainly goes all the way to the bottom, not sure about the pipe inside it though, will have to take it out again to check. If the pipe is damaged I assume this could this be repaired by simply replacing with a new bit of fuel resistant hose.

Why is the gauze so long (approx half depth of tank), presumably the petrol can only enter the pipe at the end.

The longer the gauze, the more surface area therefore the less likely to block with crap, but having said that I've damaged a tank offroading on a rock which dented the bottom of the tank and the pipe was pressed hard against it which resulted in fuel starvation on the way home. I had to remove the dip pipe, bend it sideways, and replace in the tank, job sorted.
