RRC Auto box ATF level

Jan 15, 2005 4 Replies

Hello, RRc 1991 3.9 4 speed auto (ZF)

I was doing my routine level checking and went to check the ATF level.

I switched the engine on and moved the box through all the gears and then into neutral.

When i checked the level it was impossible to actually see where the fluid was as it appears to 'splash' up the dip stick and not give a definite reading.

is there a method of checking the level without the engine on, i.e static?

Is it still splashing after you have removed, wiped and replaced the dipstick? Not encountered a problem doing the same on my '88 RRC ZF box and no idea why it would be splashing. Really unhelpful contribution - sorry!

needs to be cold, as well.

Dipstick on my ZF4 box is graduated on both sides, one side hot t' other cold. Can be a pain to get a decent reading when hot, but engine must be running or reading will be false. Persevere. Badger.

I will try it cold, i did it after a long run
