what to look for in a 2001 P38A

Hi Group I am looking to buy a P38A 2001 Range Rover. Are there any problems that I should be looking for. The air springs have been replaced. I am looking at a 4.0l motor and would add gas. What gas system is best? Any help appreciated Regards Andrew

Don't bother, the P38 is nothing but trouble, an absolute money pit of electrical problems. I have one, wish I'd never seen to bloody thing, I'm trying to sell it but before I get chance to advertise it something else goes wrong with it.

Sorry to hear about your woes. My 4.0 has been fairly reliable... since the NEW BLOCK was fitted. At 83,000 kms. Regarding electrical problems, most of them have simple solutions, not too dear either, as long as you don't go to a main dealer. This forum has been invaluable:

've even developed a cheap DIY reset tool for the air suspension computer. Search through the posts or ask a question about your particular problem, you may be pleasantly surprised.

How long have you got?

from my reading of it, later is better than earlier and if you have a good one it's fantastic, but if you have a problem one it can soon drive you to drink, madness or insolvency or any combination of the 3...

BiL Tim has a 2.5 diesel, but it's had the airsus removed and steel suspension put on...

I think thats a tad harsh, they cost nearly nothing to buy, £1500-£2k a year isnt bad on maintenance on a car like this, beside, once you sort the main problems it's a very nice car indeed.

True, they have problems, but so do all Land Rovers, I would have another tomorrow, i might even be interested in yours, at the right price?

aaarrrrggghh, no way, it's easy & cheap to get it working right nowadays, i loved that feature, I'm thinking of another soon. 4.6HSE it hardly gets used, so i arent that arsed about the fuel economy.

Main thing I have against it is that the problems are not the kind I can generally solve myself. Also, I prefer the styling of the late-model classic.

With the added bonus over the earlier classics that the trim really fits rather than disappointingly just where it touches. It was a bone of contention with Peggy specially when I got the zizzes when yet another bloody screw worked loose. I still fancy the idea of P38 DSE ideally a chipped one but not until those Italian laddies get the software package sorted out. Meantime I am keeping an eye open for a Disco 1 with the 300tdi and improved trim- then the bloody radio might fit properly etc.

Steady on Nige playing devils advocate and tempting me could get you on 'Old Harry's Game' I'm looking to "steal " one for little money Kato is good till April (mot) so a nice panic sale because a Disco needs a spot of welding will do nicely. I could have had a nice one on Fleabay today (

260176186493 ) for >1.4k but I'm being canny for now - too much stuff to do about the house to start a project -rehung the kitchen blind , repaired the bog, wired up the burgler alarm ( bloody hate to drill walls) but I need to put a wiring spur in for the psu which means fannying about under the floor which I hate even more. I reckon if I had spare pennies, I'd get a late-as-I-could-find 4.2 LSE. The extra wheelbase, although it detracts form off-roading, makes it a much better vehicle in most other respects.

Chris Perfect got an M plater, almost the last of the line, and it's fookin' ace. Jammy git :-)
