What to check when purchasing used vehicle?

In general terms, what should I check when purchasing a used, 10 yr. old Lexus? Besides checking the vin# with carfax and taking it to a garage, what else should I check? Also, should I take it to a garage that specializes in Toyotas/Lexus, or should I take it to a general garage?
