01 Renault Megane - Battery Drain Problem

Hi,

Car: 2001/2 Megane 1.4 RT 16v. Has PAS/ABS/Aircon, 28,000kms from new.

Problem: Battery is draining completely flat (not enuogh juice to power the clock memory or instrument lights, let alone start it!) over a day not being used.

Battery is fine, as its nearly new and if disconected it doesn't drain. Alternator is fine, as once jump-started it'll run and recharge the battery. It drains flat when no being.

Now, I've got bog all tools out here (in SA at the moment, but its a UK spec car) and know squat about Reno (prefer things altogether more stone-age!), but by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it via a stop/tail lamp I've come to the conclusion there's something wrong with the centre-locking/courtesy lights. With the doors shut and the courtesy lights out, there's still a 2 amp odd current draw on the battery - and it can be gotten rid of by pulling out the fuse for the locking/courtesy lights.

Any ideas what might have gone 'phut'? Thanks,

The message from snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.co.uk contains these words:

Sounds like a central locking motor got stuck.

Try making a test fuse with a lamp wired into a blown fuse - so you can see the short easily. Then waggle the door locks and see if the light flickers.

Failing that you'll have to disconnect each lock in turn to see when the short vanishes. Once you done that - fix the lock motor.
