You could get a good Mondeo for that money, but make sure the clutch is OK - that's the main expensive item.

Something with a turbo diesel. Plenty of 98 and 99 diesel Skoda Felicias out there within that price. Nice cars, by all accounts.

Rover 200 Diesel (96 onwards). L series motor never breaks - ever. It's quick and economical too.

don't buy a Vectra.

Avoid any Peugeot 306's. I got a 2.0 XSi P reg for £2k, nothing but problems with it. I've not had many problems with most Escorts I've had, or try a decent souped up Astra.

Get yourself the newest Escort you can - they are fairly cheap now as they are no longer made and you can pick up a R-V/W plate for your 2k. Try go for the 16v (Zetec) 1.6.

Well, the two I've driven were nice and a couple of neighbours have got 'em and love 'em. The motoring press don't tear 'em to bits either.

Probably because it is a golf with a skoda badge for a lot less money.

I've heard that those Diesel are a bit unrefined, is that true? They've also had problems with the cyl head gaskets, but is that just the petrol ones?

Just because your car's got a lot of problems is doesn't mean that they all have problems. I think I heared that the 306 Diesels are supposed to be good.

I don't think I said that, and yes you're right just because my car has problems it doesn't mean all the rest have problems. But have a look on bba.forum or eurocarparts forum for a list of COMMON issues with Peugeots. I heard Rolls Royce's were good. thanks Mr teacher.

They are a bit agricultural yeah but more than make up for it with performance and economy :)

No problems with the diesel engines.

There are a few HG probs with the petrol cars, but not if you look after them. All most all the failures are down to poor maintenance by owners - they are quite fragile motors if neglected. As with any car look after the engine and it'll look after you.
