Diesel starting problems

Intermittent but normally after engine has warmed up. Sometimes requires half a dozen attempts to start. If it is going to start it will start as soon as the key is turned - not after several seconds of the engine turning over. I changed the glow plugs over the weekend and added some injector cleaner to the fuel tank. Do diesels need "tuning" like petrol engines every once in a while? The car is a Peugeot 306 XLDT with 100k on the clock. Ta

Are you sure the glowplugs are actually operating? Has the light gone out before you operate the starter?

In weather like this- over 15 degrees C or so, an XUD should start fine from cold without waiting for the glowplugs. If it wont- its got a problem. The cranking period will be slightly longer, but if it needs spinning over for more than 5 seconds or so something is wrong.

Fuel draining back to the tank or air getting into the lines would be my first check.

Is the cranking speed high enough, sometimes the first sign of battery failure is intermittent starting caused by low crank speed.

Sounds like the plunger in the stop solenoid is sticking.

Try changing the stop solenoid.

Yes - even with the old ones. One of the old plugs was covered with soot - I thought this may have been the culprit.

The message from "Wainscotting" contains these words:

That was probably a dead plug.
