'96 Escort hates the rain!

This time last year the car started doign weird things in the rain. The alarm to say your door was open etc would randomly turn on and off during driving.

this year while driving the ABS warning lights came on, now as far as we know the car doesn;t have ABS, I have had a look in the Haynes manual and i can;t find any of the bits which are refered to in the ABS section. Does anyone know what this light could be an indication of?

Another problem, although not sure if its related is the cars iddling speed. It suddenly decided that it wants to idle between 1.5 k and 2k RPM. Revs during driving seem to be fine, just sees weird its occured the same time as the ABS light has started to show up. Any ideas what could be casuing it I am thinking electrical, but these are the only 2 symptoms.

I have it on good authority that when it rains, water gets in between the wing and bulkhead, and dribbles all over the fusebox.

This is why fusebox problems are so prevalent on Escorts.

"They do that sir".

Hi Rachel

I agree with Pete on this one.

I used to have 96 Escort 1.8Si that started having problems with the aircon. I traced the electrical circuit back to the fuse box and found that the fuse box was very badly corroded internally. Water had been dribbling in via the wiring loom through the bulkhead and into the fuse box. The Ford dealership were convinced that the compressor had failed and replaced it. They were quite red faced when they realised that I was right. They replaced the fuse box and put big lumps of water sealing goo around the wiring loom.

Again as Pete has said it is a common problem with Escorts. Cost of fuse boxes varies as there have been countless revisions of the unit. Alternatively if you know of someone who is a dab hand with a soldering iron it is possible to fix the original box as the corrosion actually causes dry solder joints in the box.

Regards

Nidge.
