'97 Escort - Overheating

My escort always ran with the temp gauge in the first 1/4 of the indicator, recently the temp is half way up the gauge and when stationary the temp rises pretty drastically. It has never gone in the red as I put all the heaters on full to prevent any overheating.

I have checked the radiator and hoses for leaks and there is none; what could be happening?

Thanks.

First would be to check the collant level - is it OK?

Next, take the plug off the temperature sensor (located to the right of the engine block on the Zetec engine just beside the coil pack) and put a bridging wire across the two terminals - this should cause the radiator fan to cut in. If the fan cuts in, you know that's OK, but you may want to check the temperature sensor itself.

Next would be to check the operation of the water pump - I'm not aware of any "common problems" with the water pumps in Escorts but it's a possibility.

Last would be to check there are no blockages in the system causing a restriction in the water flow, I'm sure some of the more competent of us in here will be able to tell you the best method of doing this.

Graham,

The coolant level is fine (another indicator that there is no leak in the system).

I will bridge the thermistor tonight.

How would you check the pump and blockages?

Thanks, Matt

Stick to the simple stuff would be my initial thought - if the car appears to be behaving as normal and if the cooling fan isn't kicking in, check the sender unit for the gauge...

I have the exact same problem on my escost. I have the thermostat changed and that solved the problem.
