airbag disarming and rear facing infant carseats in front

hi there,

some cars have an option to disarm the airbag if a child is seated front, or if an infant is in a carseat in front. some cars dont have this as standard, but this disarm switch is an extra.

if an infant is in a rear facing car seat, belted to a front seat, what hazard would an airbag deployment pose?the bag would just hit (or cushion) the back of the infant car seat.

"By law, you MUST NOT place a rear-facing child seat in a seat where there is an active frontal airbag." Why not?

Vauxhall catagorically refused to disarm ours. They were concerned that if an accident occured later in the car's life with the airbag non-functional and an injury resulted, that they would be liable.

Because the force of the airbag deployment is so great, that it would force the child seat upwards out of the cars seat and into the backrest.

For the sake of £40, it would be safer to buy a forward-facing child seat to use in the car.

Or just put them in the back where they're safer.

However, rear facing seats are required for group 0 & group 0+ though - ie. not until 20lbs/9months earliest.
