Any VW Gurus ? Golf Cold start issues.

See if you can decipher this slightly annoying problem.

Year 2000 Golf. (But still a MKIII as it's a hairdresser's ragtop).

1.6 SOHC. Same engine as fitted to Golfs since Victorian times.

Runs perfectly apart from starting from stone cold where it needs nursing on the throttle until there is some heat in the engine. Once it's run for maybe

1/4 mile it's fine all day. Up to that point it would cut out if it isn't kept awake by judicious use of a bit of throttle. Always but always starts - with a bit of throttle when cold. Otherwise starts with no throttle required when warm.

Thought it might be the coolant temp sensor as that is one of the inputs to the ECU. Fitted a new one. Made no difference.

Car does not have an IACV, but has a motorised throttle body which controls idle. This is working freely and idle is perfect when the engine has any heat in it at all. Just cuts out when stone cold.

Any ideas anyone ?

early ones had an additional injector for cold starting I don't know if the later ones are the same, if yours has this, is the plug on ok? and does it power up when cold?

I'm struggling to find such a beast in the gloom. i.e. Looks like an injector, has a plug from the loom and has a fuel supply. Found lots of similar but slightly different parts on the inlet manifold.

Think I'll hack it all off and fit an 1" 3/4 SU ;-)

Will check it all out tomorrow.
