Are these 'cheapy' £300 car dealer places any good?

In those free Auto Ads magazines there are lots of trade adverts with cars for a few hundred quid. Some of these dealers specialize in cars under £1,000.

Are these £300 etc quid cars (they have valid MOTs) likely to be ok or am I just seriously wasting my money?

Dave Kinder (D Kinder) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Clue :

They're not charities. That £300 includes their profit on the deal.

Similar answer to the one I gave on your trade or private question. Unless you 'know' cars, buying any s/h car is a gamble, and the cheaper they are, the bigger the gamble. For that sort of money you're better off going private. Find a mate or someone who genuinely knows cars to help you select. Given todays market, some surprisingly good cars can be picked up for sub £500 money. As prices seem to be based on age rather than condition. Guy at work baught a mid 90's Rover 214 I think, a couple of months ago.£200, private sale. A little rust around the wheel arches. 11 months MOT, 4 good tyres, clean undamaged interior. Looks quite smart, and mechanically it seems very sound. Mike.

THey're cars that have been bought at auctions for a hundred quid or=20 so. THey'll be OK but they're disposable bangers and usually have very=20 high mileage. Expect to find old Cavaliers, K reg Mondeos, Astras etc.=20 Go for the older ones and try and find one with a bit of history. TAKE=20 A MATE WHO KNOWS WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

If you know what you are looking at then you can get some very cheap motoring indeed. Expect to have to buy a new car at least once a year, plus most of the time if something goes wrong it's easier to bin it and get a new one than spend any money getting it fixed.

Myself I prefer new cars because I often drive long distances and I want something I can rely on (yes I know new cars can break too but it's less common), my Dad on the other hand just needs a car to go to the shops and back so spends a couple of hundred quid on a banger, he's got an H-reg Cavileer at the moment, good motor, although a bit sensitive to wet weather.
