Astra (1.7td Isuzi) - Pressurised Water System

I've recently finished replacing the head gasket on the above mentioned car. Head was tested and skimmed and all seemed to go well.

However yesterday I noticed that water was leaking from the little hole in the water pump (hole past seals i'm told). The water system was also pressurised when I undid the lid, despite it being stood for a couple of days. The engine was turned around manually about 6 times however before opening the lid.

When I first started the engine the water system did not seem to pressurise and all ran well with the temperature behaving well.

Does this mean that the head is leaking again somewhere ? Cracked bore liner ? Or could it be a blocked hose or valve somewhere ? I know rad weld was used in the car before....!

Cheers, Gary

Sounds like you need a new pump. The fact that the system holds pressure, would only seem to indicate that the system has no leaks, apart from that of the pump when it's running. It would be worth checking or replacing the rad cap, in case it's pressurising the system too much.

That sounds about right. All cooling systems are pressurised when hot, to increase the boiling temperature of the coolant. Usually by around 10-15lbs psi Usually the pressure is lost as the engine cools. The fact that yours doesn't could indicate that the system is over pressurising. Hence my suggestion about the radiator cap.

Doesn't sound like it.

Apart from the water pump leak, everything seems reasonably normal. Mike.

Thus spake Mike G unto the assembled multitudes:

FWIW, when I had a 1990 Astra 1.6L I had a coolant leak from the water pump, which was due to the pump being worn out (bearings gone) - a new pump cured the problem.
