Audi A4 1.9 TDi Loss of Power

A friend's 1997 Audi A4 1.9 TDI (Diesel) is suffering from loss of power on acceleration.

When attempting to accelerate or to go up an incline, there is a loss of pulling power (almost as if the turbo is not kicking in). This problem is intermittent, but can last for up to a 20 minutes or so.

The Air filter and fuel filter have recently been replaced and the oil is clean. He has put Redex through the system in an attempt to ensure the fuel injectors are clean. There is no sign of excessive smoking from the exhaust.

Has anyone any idea as to what the problem might be?

TIA

Most likely candidate is a faulty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF), IMHO.

Possibly MAF meter. Short of swapping it out for a good one or buying yourselves a copy of VAG-COM it's difficult to diagnose.

Done one a few weeks back it felt like the turbo was just starting to boost then it was gutless and flat so swapped one off another car and it went like a rocket And the maf doesn't show up on plug in diagnostic equipment but it's usually that. I heard of a way of testing it by mesuring the voltage on a pin but no details. Bought one from a Bosch dealer, lots cheaper and genuine! the one I did was bosch number 0 281 002 216 and vw audi number 028 906 461.

It doesn't come up as a fault, you have to log the airflow as you drive it & then compare it with the expected numbers
