A friend has an Astra H with 1.8 litre petrol engine. The automatic tranny was changing erratically. She took it to a workshop who told her that the control valve solenoid is defective (GM part 55567050) - the one at the top front of the engine. Since this controls variable camshaft, how would it sway the slushbox? Maybe it would result in lack of power, so the gearbox shift down a cog?
bad camshaft control valve solenoid (Astra) effects?

On some cars engine faults can make the box go into a limp home mode. I came across this first on an automatic polo, it would be driving along fine and suddenly the gear shifting was rough and the warning lights came on. It would still drive. The cause was the crank position sensor. So it may well be a similar thing in your case.
