Black smoke

Oct 31, 2003 11 Replies

My Ka (non diesel, 51k miles, v reg) has black/dark grey smoke coming from the exhaust when revved, I'm sure it didn't used to and I'm sure its worse under load but can't look behind and drive at the same time :)

Any ideas?

Ben

I think everyone should know Ford never made a diesel Ka - but just thought I should say it seeing as black smoke from diesels seems 2 be more common than from petrols....

Could be running rich, try having it tuned.

OK cheers

Not yet but I'm working on getting them to do it! :)

Black smoke is a sign of it running rich - but if the Endura-E is going this, it should have trigged a warning lamp.

What's the exhaust like? A little bit of a sooty deposit is fine, do you have a lot of it, and a dark smudge on the rear bumper just above the exhaust?

Does it only do it when cold? Or when hot (like after twenty minutes driving)? Or all of the time?

I can't see how you can "tune" a Ka. There's no carb to fiddle with, I imagine it's a main dealer job with everything being run through the ECU. Could try getting the fault codes read.

Warning lamp - didnt think there were any on the minimalist dash ;-)

Quite sooty, I'm guna get someone to drive behind me when the engines hot to see how bad it is.

Not sure - will find out

Would have all disappeared by the time I reversed and the airflow round the car would disperse it.

Theres not a terrible amount - but I'm just worried...
