Blown cylinder head gasket ??? Possible or not

I have a Astra 1400 M reg, with an oil leak ??

from beneath the exhaust manifold on the engine.

The only possibility is from the cylinder head gasket.

Is this likely, and why would the oil leak from there ??? or is there a more serious underlying problem.

How many gaskets would I need to replace head gasket, presumeably everthing comes off with the head ?? So I would only need one.

you need a head set plus the appropriate gasket sealant glue for the cam box. you should also replace the head bolts, but most people don't. might also be a good time to replace oil, filter, cam belt and coolant.

there is an oil way there, you might need a head skim as well & the appropriate gaskets as Mr C has said.

These phase II engines will run for ever. I wouldn't worry. They're s**te, but I bet you can't break it (providing you keep the oil topped up).

If the compression is still good and the oil leak is only slight then you might be able to carry on for a while. Think of the oil leak as a preventative rust treatment :-)

Often complete head sets are cheaper than the head gasket alone. With the right tools I beleive it's possible to remove the head complete but otherwise I think the camshaft housing needs to come off. You can usually leave the inlet and exhaust manifolds alone.

Be sure that it is the head gasket and not just a leak from the rocker cover before you do anything.

the head bolts hold the cambox to the head, it is impossible to remove the head without breaking the cambox seal. You are thinking of changing the camshaft without removing the head, there are a set of special tappet depressors that hold everything away while the cam is withdrawn, worth hiring if needed, but expensive to buy unless you specialise.

I thought there was also a clamp that clamped the cam housing to the head, allowing you to remove it in one go but I'm probably wrong.
