Hi,
The hydraulic fluid pump on my citroen XM 1997 makes a scraping noise when the engine revs. When idling it isn't audible, only a tick now and then. Is the pump on its way out?

I stand to be corrected but i think the bearings play up on these,my father in law had one and had to change the exact pump for the same reason HTH

Is the belt really tight ( much tighter than an alternator)?

No, the alternator and the HP pump are driven by the same belt. Not overtightened...
