DIY Alloy wheel clean up

May 27, 2009 2 Replies

I took a sanding disk to the corrosion on my Focus wheels at the weekend and they have come up reasonably well. I would like to apply some sort of clear Lacquer now to the bare metal, can anyone recommend a product ? I'm mainly concerned with stopping the corrosion coming back, since they already look a lot better than before.

You need acid etch primer (the only primer that sticks to aluminium), silver paint and lacquer. You can't lacquer bare aluminium - a lot of people with polished aluminium wheels have tried it and found out that it doesn't work...

I did the same to some old Toyota wheels years ago - the lacquer was flaking off - and applied nothing at all afterwards. Bare alloy gets a matt coating rather than corrosion.
