Ive got a escort cabriolet auto 1996 and i have major over revving problems and cannot get to the cause of it. I can drive down the road at over 40mph without using the eccelerator which in turn makes it very hard to brake as i am constantly fighting against the engine. The rev's sit between 1500-3000, Can anybody help???

Idle control valve is sticking, or the throttle linkage is stuck. Use the clutch when braking and it'll save wear on the pads.
He might have problems in following your advice it being an automatic... :)
