On a rusty pipe, maybe, but on a new one, I've often thought about doing the same, especially as the front pipe on my wife's car cost £240 at a main dealer, because no pattern part manufacturers could supply... (Main dealer pipe was only £100 short of a full stainless system)

Yes, I have had an MOT Advisory Notice for "rust on rear silencer" in the past, even though the backbox was in legal condition.
I did look underneath and there was some surface corrosion around the rear seam which I wire-brushed then painted with rust converter.
