I have heard you can unlock these to gain more info.(gauge and lamp test ,water temp,speed in mph or kmph, and estimated mileage remaining in tank to name but a few things) Does any one know how?

You hold the odometer reset button while turning the ignition on. Further button presses cycle through various test modes. More info here:-
