ford.hard to get into 2nd+reverse

hi all

i've got a new shape ford transit 2001,front wheel drive,2litre turb diesel.i've owned for 18 months

for the last 2 weeks i some times find it hard to get into 2nd and reverse gears,..i.e

clutch down..shift to reverse..clutch out..gearlever pops out of reverse

it sought of seems that if the lever could move a further 2mm,then it would stay in gear.i've taken rubber floor gater to check for free movements.

it also happens when i change from 1st to 2nd..i some times have try 2 or 3 times

my configuration of gears is:

1 3 5 2 4 R

its done 63.000 miles one origonal cluth

any ideas

thanks rday

I hate to say it but when the last one I had anything to do with did this Ford fitted a new gearbox. (About the same mileage , 18 months old)

And cos its out of warranty being on 63,000 miles ill bet ya have to pay for the lot which aint going to be cheap on the newer ones which is very annoying :( but get them to diagnose it first as it could be a mis aligned adjustment on the lever itself, simple enuf fix and if its the box get them to find out how much ford will shove toward the cost considering there are trannies mostly pushing 150k on the clock with ease and no gearbox's falling out yet ;-)

it's the mtx75 box you've got or a variation of if it was rwd I would have pointed you in the correct direction, but as it's fwd I don't know but it would have been the classic case of the selector needle shearing off on the rwd box or the syncro's being worn out they are only brass so they only last a certain amount of time I'd hate to say this but if you take it to someone who rebuilds boxes they will strip it and tell you that it's not had an easy life or it could be that the fluid has leaked away either way, it's box out and see what happens when it comes apart or you can get the fluid topped up

Do the gearbox work for the local Ford guys. The FWD Transit has a problem with the selector mechanism. Remove both cables Remove the 7x 10mm studs and the reversing light switch Lift out the selector mechanism Dismantle it..(Quite easy) The needle roller bearing at the upper portion of the selector shaft will be RUSTED away Also the shaft is seizing to the alloy. ( Hence difficult gear selection ) Sandpaper the shaft Replace needle roller. (Timken bearing = £2.20) Lubricate shaft/housing with wheel bearing grease Reassemble it Refit to box

This is not a difficult job....2 hrs Max

Charge the Ford guys £375 + vat for this Well maybe Ford will learn to design their shitty cars/vans properly sometime... also rear axles falling out of the RWD transits now....Joke
