I've got some Golf 16V brake calipers that I want to refurb. The car's in bits, so they can be done on the bench. But they're very very very rusty looking. Can you just wire wheel them down, or am I more likely to get a set of working calipers by exchanging them at the factors?
How buggered can a caliper be and still be refurbed?

Buggered inside or outside? Rusting through from the ooutsides unheard of, rust on the inside & they're scrap. Well you can fix them but a recon set for a golf will be cheaper.
As long as the bores haven't any rust then you should be OK but at=20 around =A360 for an exchange recon unit why take the risk?

Electrolytic cleaning is what you want :)
Get a battery charger and some washing soda and have 'em like new effortlessly.

You should've seen my Cortina hubs and calipers before and after the process, I guarentee you'll have run out of rusty bits to clean after a couple of days, it's so much fun :)
