Nissan Bluebird wiper arm linkages

Hi. The driver's side windscreen wiper stopped working yesterday on my

1988 (UK built) Nissan Bluebird 1.6LX. The passenger side carried on working ok. I've just removed all the trim at the bottom of the windscreen and i can see that the arm from the passenger side wiper linkage to the driver's side linkage has simply dropped off at the passenger side wiper linkage end. I've uploaded some photos:

The arms seem to be connected to the linkages with some kind of weird hemisperical fixing. Do these just clip together? If so, how?! Because mine has popped off i guess it might be worn and best to replace it with a new one? Nissan sell the arms for less than a tenner each, but even if i bought one i don't know how to fit them together. Any help with this would really be appreciated (especially before the snow arrives!).

TIA...Nick

They just squeeze together to fit the new ones, very simple. As a temporary measure till you can get the new ones,if you just squeeze the outsides of the cup of the old one with some grips(not too hard) and then push on to the the ball it should hold for a while.

Yep, they just pop on and off. Old Cavaliers do the same trick - - in my case during a thunderstorm. Dave

Squeeze them together & wrap pvc tape round the linkage to hold it together till you get new ones.

Thanks for all the replies chaps. Now i know they just pop on and off, i've ordered a replacement arm from the local Nissan dealer (only 8 quid).

Fortunately i've got the use of another car until i fix it, so i don't need to do that at the moment. It's a great tip though - i always have a roll of tape in the "box of useful stuff" in the boot, so if it ever happens again while i'm out and about i should be able to get myself home with operational wipers!

I actualy used a long cable tie in a figure of 8 around the linkage. Realy good fun in a thunderstorm with one wiper blade completly bolloxed. Have to bend it as straight as possible............ Fun with a capital "F". Dave

Hmm, i'll make sure i add some cable ties to my box of stuff in the boot.

I can imagine! Luckily mine gave way just a few hundred yards from home. Ten minutes earlier and it would have left me stranded while overtaking trucks on the M11.

The dealer parts desk was were even open on Sunday morning (impressive), so went and picked up the new link arm. Sadly, Nissan have redesigned the arm so that the caps that fit onto the ball are now separate from the arm, but they didn't tell me that and didn't have the caps in stock (not so impressive). So had to wait until today for the caps. I fitted it all this lunchtime (in between snow showers!) and the new design seems more secure than the old, so fingers crossed it holds. Thanks again for the help.

Ho yus, they always manage to choose the worst weather :o)

On some or possibly all Cavaliers, the wiper motor is adjacent to the suspended arm, which by design is the one that fails. This proved very handy - a few strong elastic bands round the arm and motor to hold everything in place and it was still fine a couple of years later when I sold it.
