Other CX issue - electric window.

Personally my muppetry was trying to work out how I was getting a shock off the points whilst manually opening & closing them on a BMC1300. After quite a few shocks it occurred to me that holdint the distributor cap in my left hand probably wasn't helping.

This was before RCDs, too.

Scary but not actually as bad as it sounds. Worst is when you get current carried directly through one or more major organs. In this case it'll have either gone straight across to the neutral or earth on the cable (also in your gob), or down your body and to earth - electrical skin effect will ensure that most of the current goes via your skin rather than through the organs.

I once worked with a guy who took a 200kV shock (200kV RMS actually so probably near 300kV peak) off a piece of equipment used to test 110kV electrical switchgear for flashover. By design the equipment would have shut off after nanoseconds/microseconds but he still flew through the air with the greatest of ease and needed a very, very long lie down....

Not if you srip the wires individually :-( & the skin effect isn't very large at 50Hz, quite handy for Tesla coils though.

I had this exact same problem on a CX estate I owned in the late 90s. I seem to remember that the runners which hold the glass in place at the base were either broken or not holding the glass as they should. In the end I took the whole lot apart and rebuilt from s/h parts I sourced from a local breakers. This was seven years ago ! I remember that my efforts were not totally succesful but at least I didn't have rain driving into the gap and worse the very irritating sound of general road and weather noise in my ear on a long run.

Someone in the CX mailgroup must have recent experience of this problem and could better advise. If not, my only suggestion would be to try and source a complete door from a breakers.....as long as it has all the bits and pieces with it it wouldn't matter whether if it was in poor condition (you'll pay less anyway) but it might be worth getting the seller to verify the operation of the window mechanism by wiring it up to a battery. If it doesn't work or is in the same condition or worse than yours (I suspect thismay be a common problem with CX windows) the only use the door will be to you is for practice ! Possibly a spare motor and glass. Could be worthwhile just for this.

By 12V DC?

Hmm, you can feel a "shock" if you touch a 9v battery to your tounge, so I imagine a 12V car battery could be reasonably painful. So if "not being very sensible" included sticking electrodes into his body, then I guess anything is possible...

Do you lick the terminals on a car battery often? The tongue is somewhat more sensitive than fingers.

Pfft, my Physics teacher did pretty much the same to our class, deliberately (to show the effect of inductance, IIRC).

Take a 1.5V AA battery. Hook it up to the primary coil of a step-up transformer. Plug leads into the secondary coil, and hold them. The teacher then disconnects the battery from the circuit, causing you to get a high-voltage, low-current shock.

Then wait for someone to get the bright idea of hooking up the same circuit with a 40V DC lab-pack, and you get a shock that REALLY hurts...
