Peugeot 306 - Engine about to let go?

Ok got a 306 1.6 (TU5JP engine). Currently got 92000 miles on it (1998 R). The past few week its been getting rougher and rougher. Firstly if you open the bonnet and rev it a little its extremely loud and rattley, is this normal? I know its a peugeot!

Secondly, say you in second at say 30mph, and take you foot off the accelerator, you get a smooth decleration for about 1 second, then it seems as though something changes suddenly and the engine decelerates quicker and quite jerkily. Am i imagining this or does anyone know whats up?

And finally, first gear, accelerate, let foof of throttle, and its accompanied by a, how do i describe it?, kind of a grrrrrrrr sound, that decreases with revs. Once again anyone any idea?

Car is still on original clutch etc, and its been serviced regulary. Been in the family since it had 15000 miles on it so I know its been looked after.

Cheers

Ben

Ps - What sort of mileage could i expect to get from one of these before we get major problems?? (Hoping this isnt a major problem)

Don't know what the problem is, but to answer your last question, the TU lump is a tough little bugger and should see out 150k+ if it's not abused and has regular oil/filter changes. The top ends do get rattly even when cared for though, and this can start from around the 40k mark upwards. But it usually creeps in progressively rather than within a week. We had a 106XSi with the 1360cc version of this engine and it had done 90k. The top end was noisy, despite valve clearances being OK and the top end being very clean. Still went well though - it's just the way they are.

The overrun problem (initial smooth deceleration followed by sharper / jerky deceleration) sounds like you might have an air leak on the induction side. What does the car idle like?

Check and adjust the valve clearances - it's a piece of p*ss on these engines. No shims to worry about - just a locknut and screw. If it's suddenly got clattery maybe one of the locknuts has worked loose (I've heard of this before). I checked/adjusted all 8 on the 106 in less than an hour, having never done it before. Even getting the cam cover off is a doddle (just two bolts), although it WILL need a new rubber gasket, despite the Haynes manual suggesting you can re-use them. About a fiver from a Pug dealer.
