The conclusion seems to be the battery (Halfords less than a year old) had one bad cell. Halfords tested the car saying there was a current leakage when ignition off - I found that the Blaupunkt (according to their helpdesk) Woodstock uses 0.5A for ½ hour after turning off the ignition, and then a tiny amount to keep the radio settings - I guess this is what the Halfords guy was measuring.

How did he measure it? A clamp meter that goes round a cable rather than by direct connection? They are notoriously inaccurate at low currents.
The quiescent draw on my Woodstock is under 10mA.
