You probably can't, over the general noise & clatter. I appreciate that diesels are more sophisticated and much quieter these days, but having driven diesel Transits as part of my engineering job since the seventies, I wouldn't even consider a diesel powered car. Also, diesel fuel is messy and it stinks. I prefer not to hear my engine when stopped at traffic lights and I'm quite willing to pay the extra fuel cost for the privilege. If you want economy and low emission, get an LPG powered vehicle. as Jeremy Clarkson once commented - "They're OK for farm machinery".
