Reverse lights not working...

Anyone help me with my reversing lights? I have an Austin Metro ('88) andneither reverse light works. Checked bulbs and fuse, no problems there, soI'm assuming it's either the wiring or the switch on the gearbox (?). I'mcertainly no expert but don't mind rolling my sleeves up and doing it myselfif it's likely I can fix it. Can anyone tell me where to look, what to lookfor, and how to fix it? And if I end up taking it to a garage, how muchshould they charge to fix it?Also a little while ago my car seemed to be backfiring a bit, but it hasn'tdone it lately. Seemed to be mostly when braking but not exclusively. Anyideas what caused it and how to avoid/fix it in future?TIA...

Assuming it is the switch, then about a tenner for the switch, plus a quarter hour labour, so a reasonable total would be thirty quid.

Thanks. Not too painful then! I was guessing that the switch wouldn't cost too much and that it wouldn't take long to put right...
