I have a '96 Renault Clio and I have discovered both of the reverse lights aren't working. I have checked both the fuse and tried replacing the bulbs but this didn't work. I also closely inspected the contacts and these were clean.
Any other suggestions would be most welcome!
Could be a dodgey sender on the gearbox or the gear selector arm. i dont know your model well enough to say but i would check teh haynes. sometimes they wiggle loose and fall off and other times the contacts corrode through water ingress and other such nasties.
I had this problem on my Citroen AX. It turned out to be the reversing switch on the gearbox. Cost about a tenner and was dead easy to fit.
I suggest you locate the switch and try to find out whether the switch is forming a good low-impedance circuit when the Clio is placed in reverse. The easiest way to do this is with a multimeter, or you could wangle a test circuit with a bulb. If not, replace the switch and you should be in business.
Unscrew the reversing light switch from the gearbox then connect the wires on to it again and (making sure the ignition is on without the engine running) push the ball in a few times to see if the lights come on. If they don't, pull off the plug again and join the connectors together with a short length of electrical cable (or even a bent paperclip) which should bring on the lights. If they do come on get another switch but if they don't, get a specialist. :)
