electrics.

But how do i find that and how easy is it to replace them

And Dave Baker ( snipped-for-privacy@aol.comma) :replied

My Fiesta (1998) is exhibiting the same symptoms, well, almost. Sometimes they come on, sometimes they stick on and I have to lift the pedal up a bit with my left foot to make them go off and also, one of my rear lights keeps blowing the bulbs. They're only about 50p each to replace but it's still a pain in the a*se and I keep getting stopped by the Old Bill (not surprisingly) to tell me I've got a light out....

Are the problems likely to be linked?

The last thing I wanna do is take this to a Ford Garage - it will cost me more than the car is worth. I suppose I could find a cheap n cheerful auto electrician out of Yellow Pages if that's what I need but it might be easily done by a DIY grease monkey.

TIA for all help

Steve, Yorkshire.

The brake light switch needs to be adjusted or replaced, it is easy to do yourself, it is located just above the brake pedal itself, it is fixed in position by splines around its body, twisting the switch anticlockwise will release it, you can then position it "slightly" further in. or fit a new one after removing the wiring.

The bulbs will blow much more frequently if the lights stick on through overheating, also the switch may be flickering the brake lights on and off especially on bumpy roads.

bridge the wires on the Brake light switch... if lights come on then replace it.

I like this one - strange how a stop and tail bulb was swapped, one being a two filament with an offset connector that made me laugh. Anyway I've stopped laughing now. Fiestas/Escorts etc are prone to having brake light swiches sticking on or flickering when going over bumps, I see two a day on my way to work. Fords are also use to having earthing problems. Here's what I suggest start by buying a brake light switch (a ford one) replace this, faulty switches cause heat/sparks and even power surges who knows. Now once this has been done get somebody to follow you and check the brake light. If the faults still there pull-out the rear lights and clean the earthing to the body of the car.
