Here's one getting to 60 in about 5 seconds, despite a cloth head driver who allowed it to change up from 1st to 2nd and back down to 1st again :-)

I can happily say that my diesel mileage in the last year has been negligible. A few days in a diesel Cherokee (bleurghh) and a couple of weeks in a Rover 75 CDTi were my longest diesel stints.

There's something sublime about something with a carb that's not unlike a drainpipe with a baked bean tin lid in it.

Given the choice between a Rover 75CDTi & a V8 Cherokee I think I'd still prefer the Rover. I'm actually wondering which would get stuck 1st.

That depends on whether you like a screamer or not. These days sound legislation as killed the fun for me. For example, the last Alfa 2 litre I drove sounded very nice, quiet and refined but the whine (from the belts) was disappointing when letting it rip. I prefer something a bit more..er..raucous.

Funny you should say that but I've yet to hear a diesel sound I prefer to the 5 cylinder Alfa install. Sure there are quieter more refined sounds to be had but the Alfa is a monster.

After a while you learn to adopt the attitude there's 'nowt as blind as those who cannot see'... and that's not because of any clouds of diesel smoke obscuring their view, either. ;-)

Longest stints *this year*. I've been avoiding diesels as I don't like them. I've driven a lot of diesel engined stuff over the years and there aren't many that I like. BMW 330d goes ok but has the usual narrow torque band problem. Merc E280 CDi goes very well with the 7 speed automatic box, Range Rover V8 diesel is almost as good as the old NA petrol one was. Jag X-type 2.2d isn't horrible, but it's very very peaky.

I said quite often that my Audi V6 2.5 TDi wasn't bad, as diesels go. I can't abide that rattly horrible 1.9 chunk of utterly unrefined s**te that you seem to find acceptable.
