Toyota Avensis 2001 VVTi 2.0

The idle speed on the above car seems to be a tad low. It was fine when I bought it about two years ago now but over time the idle seems to have gradually dropped. Once warmed up it tends to idle around 750RPM which isn't too bad but still generally requires a tweak of the accelerator just prior to moving off as it just takes that fraction of a second to pick up and attempting to move off without the quick rev beforehand would almost certainly stall it.

Furthermore, when the engine is restarted after say a two-minute stop to buy a newspaper (and anything upto an hour or two after it's been warmed-up) drops the revs to 700RPM for anything upto 20 minutes. Any attempt at using the power-sterring without any throttle stalls it. It's a bit of a nuisance when reversing out of a downward slope parking spot in a supermarket as my right foot should be on the brake not tickling the accelerator to avoid it stalling whilst I use the power-steering!

Having not played with cars since they had carburettors I'm not sure how easy it is to alter the idle speed, another 50RPM would probably be sufficient. Is this an easy job or is it ECU jiggery-pokery?

TIA

There is no provision to alter the idle speed. 675 rpm plus or minus 50 when warmed up is correct.

Powers steering generally has a sensor which increases idle speed to compensate for the load.

Other possibilities might be the idle air control valve stuck or disconnected.

I would recommend taking it to a Toyota specialist as there is little the home mechanic can actually DO on many modern vehicles.

That's what I figured. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
