Vauxhall - Sintra, Noisy Engine

I have a 2.2 Ecotech Sintra - 1988 (S).

Have just had the head gasket replaced and the garage left the car in a bad state.

they had "tuned" the engine as far as possible, but it was running fast, couldn't get it below 1200 RPM on idle!

Eventually found it was sucking in air through a side "home made" gasket!!!!

Sorted that problem and a twisted pipe from the inlet manifold to the brave servo.

Only problem left now is a noist engine, it sounds as if the exhaust has blown, but the noise is coming from the carburettor and amplifying through the air system, would this possibly be anything to do with the air/fuel mixture being adjusted by the garage when the leaking gasket and twisted pipe was still in place? If not any suggestions????

HELP!!!!

Thanks

Sintras have a closed loop feedback system, therefore no adjustment can be carried out on emissions. From what you have described, this could be an induction feedback caused by an incorrectly fitted timing belt. Another possibility is the secondary airpump remaining engaged, but without hearing it, these are just guesses.

Right firstly sounds like you went to an appaulling garage! It doesnt pay to cut corners on a job like this, take it to someone who knows what they're doing- you may well have all other kinds of problems lurking! :(

Engines from ~1992 have all been fuel injected and run closed loop when hot so that the cat works at its more efficient and exhaust emissions are minimal, therefore there is no carburettor, and you cannot "tune" such an engine- the ECU applies fuel and ignition from fixed maps within its memory adjusted by inputs received from its sensors. Obviously if the signals are incorrect or absent then the ECU is flying blind.

Anyways, to me it sounds like either part of the induction trunking has been re assembled incorrectly, or is missing so is resonanting, or the aux air pump is for some reason remaining powered up (should only run for max 30 seconds at cold start), or there is some other problem with the secondary air injection.

I think you would be better to cut your losses, take it to a known good VX dealer, and have the original garage pay the bill.

Carburettor? I'd say you need to take it to someone who knows...

To start with, it's "Ecotec", not how you spelt it.

And to finish with, Ecotec is short for "Every Component On This Engine's Crap".

HTH :-)
