I just plugged 'Passat indicator relay' into Google and had a look at the first half a dozen links.

The message from "Johnny" contains these words:

That's common - the indicator wiring goes through the hazard switch on many cars.

It appears that you're now almost trained enough to drive a BMW 5 series. Another 2000 miles without indicators and you can buy one.

Are you sure about the heavy duty flasher unit? I built a kit-car which used a lot of Sierra parts and both the Sierra and hence the kit-car use a single flasher unit for both indicators and hazards. It also actually copes with six lamps (inc. trailer) + 2 side repeaters.

Yup - modern electronic units can do both.
