What is the difference between the cruise control modules of early 90 Miata and later years? Most tech service/shop manuals state that the module is self diagnostic (with appropriate probes, etc).... but my actual module is NOTHING like those depicted in the manuals. Hence I cant even find the proper ports to test! Any Comments?

Well, the Mazda description of 1995 model trouble codes etc seems to be exactly the same as for the early Miatas in the Enthusiast manual. Seems strange they would be the same if the unit was changed.
How did you determine that you have a Mazda unit, rather than some aftermarket one?
