Model designation?

I'm new to the Miata world, and haven't, as of yet, figured out all of the different models. I have read postings about peoples "M", "M1", "M2", "SE", and "R". The SE and R are simple (Race/Racing & Special Edition), but the others have me confused. Can someone enlighten me?

Thank you,

SE, R and M refer to trim/option packages.

Each year there's an "M" edition with a special color and some other fancy stuff (alarm, whatever).

Sometimes they bring out an SE edition with a non-catalog color or something.

R generally means a higher performance suspension package (LSD, stiffer springs/shocks, heavier swaybars).

M1 is slang for 97 and earlier -- the ones with pop-up headlights.

M2 is slang for 99 and later -- the ones w/o air-brakes.

IIRC, there weren't any 98s.

There's also LE limited edition and STO special touring ?

can't remember what that one stands for.

'air brakes' is derogatory for the pop-up headlights, 'barn doors' is a kinder term ;-)

Nonsense. I use them both equally affectionately. :)

Whatever you call them, they do cause a noticable increase in turbulance when their up. You probably have to have your elbow hanging out to notice.

What about NA, NB, 10AE etc. Anyone care to explain?

NA is another term for M1 and NB for M2. 10AE is a tenth anniversary edition.

Thank you. 10AE had me stumped. I had figured out NA and NB, but I still would like to know where they come from, is it from the VIN?

I guess I have to change my name as ther now seem to be three of us using the handle John on this newsgroup (and it's such an uncommon name).
