1979 6.9 transmission oil

does anyone know how to check the trans oil on a '79 6.9. i think i found the dipstick - left rear of the engine. but how do you pull the dipstick out? it has a funny lever. thanks.

grab it and pull it out :)

the lever is simply a handle to make it easy, not meant to confuse.

check with the engine running and ensure that the oil level is between the 2 marks on the stick

If it's like the dipstick on my '83, the top locks to the dipstick tube. Un-snap the top by pushing or pulling then dipstick can be removed.

The lever is a LOCK. Pull up on it to unlock the dipstick. Then pull the stick out by gripping the round collar. Check the fluid HOT (car had been driven at least fifteen minutes). If the fluid level is between the two marks on the stick, leave it alone. If low, add a half pint and recheck. When checking, push the stick all the way in but do not push down the lock lever.
