1995 SL600 questions

Apr 17, 2008 4 Replies

Hi- A distant relative has a 1995 SL 600 for sale- 75000 miles- It has a couple of issues-

  1. Front grill is broken
  2. V-12 motor has a rattle- I can see the serpentine belt idler is bad, but it also is leaking coolant. Questions- Where is a good source of used parts? ( grill) How hard is it to change out a water pump?

He's asking 10,000.00- reasonable deal?

Thanks

He's asking 10,000.00- reasonable deal? ____________________________________________________________________ You could spend that much repairing the engine, water pump, and grill. These older 600 series cars are a money pit.

Offer him 10k if he has all the faults fixed first.

These are very specialized cars, everything is very expensive, even by M-B standards. The dealer is often the only source for some parts which means such parts will cost substantially more than parts for more common engines which have second sources. The V-12 is a gas hog and a 13 year old SL600 is, well, just another 13 year old SL.

Buy this car only if its running and maintenance cost won't bother you.

Remember, nobody NEEDS a SL600 and one day you will want to sell it.
