Have just bought 1980: 240D. Transmission does not change out of lst gear. Any recommendations prior to removal and rebuilt.

Make sure the vacuum going to the trans is 110% correct!!!!!

All the upshifts are vacuum controlled on the 1980 trans.

Yes, first check that the "kick down" switch (under the accelerator pedal) isn't stuck AND that its wires (underneath the floor pan) are not abraded and shorted to ground.
