Good old NJ (Jersey City). Here in sunny San Diego it's $2.29/gal and the clerk gets mad at you it you don't pay at the pump.

Well, I don't think we do. Self serve, that is to say the lack of a Mayberry R.F.D. type to put the hose into the car, should result in lower retail prices due to fewer costs (labor) at the retail level.

What I had said was that the only reason for a state to require an attendant was to have a cost free jobs program. I don't see where we are in agreement.

Just to put things into perspective for you gentlemen across the water, my diesel fuel costs me nearly £1.00 per liter. There are 4.5 (roughly) litres to the Imperial gallon, which is slightly larger than the US gallon.

Without going into reference books, let's say that there are four litres to a US gallon, you will probably know better than me.

So that makes my diesel £4.00 per US gallon.

I will leave you to do the conversion between English £ and US$

I was driving through LA on 4/30 and at peak rush hour I5 going noth and US101 South were blocked by sami-tractort trucks protesting the cost of diesl. They were arrested but it did muck up the moring commute. The price of diesel on I5 last week ranged from 2.19 to 2.55 a gallon. wolf

You have a different form of government with differing choices made as to taxes and services. It is not really the same thing. I pay $160.00 per month in health insurance. My guess is that you do not.

I said tongue in check that in NJ we have low prices and they even pump it for you, your comments about low wage jobs is pure nonsense and dosen't rate a comment. Self serve doesn't lower prices it just raises the price for the service that you used to get.

that is just plain old price gouging, wholesale #2 oil in NY harbor is about .98 per gallon, it can't be too much more on the west cost, but let's say it is 1.09 pre gallon, add in about .55 - .70 cents per gallon for taxes, transport and profit and you'll get what a fair price should be

It is not a matter of perspective, but of relativity. Would you or would you not complain if next month your fuel cost went up 30%? That is what ours has done. Comparing your prices to ours is apples and oranges. You have to compare the rates of increase. How long has your fuel been running nearly £1.00 per liter? How long ago was it running you £0.78/L? That would be equal to the change in prices we have experienced in the US.

You know what nationalism (or jingoism) is, don't you? That's what the Left calls patriotism when its practiced by Americans.

House prices, for example, are far higher here than in the US for similar properties - up to three times more expensive I think. I live in the very north of Scotland, where a vehicle is essential, as there are no services close-by. In order to get materials and hardware I have to get down to Inverness, which is a 140 mile round-trip. The fuel stations here are the most expensive in the UK.

By contrast, in the south of England, given the very high density of population, one only has to travel a few miles to get anything one might wish to buy, yet fuel costs there are substantially lower than they are where I live. It's a double-whammy...

Having said that, I live in a most beautiful corner of the globe, where the population density is similar to New Zealand : I have a quality of life that is superb, and when the conditions are right I can see with the naked eye mountains that are 100 miles away.

So perhaps I should pay for that privilige ?
