Had an offer of a rear axle (tube type) from a 1969 MGB GT which takes wire wheels.
Is it possible to fit this to a 1972 roadster? Either as a unit or swap the half shafts? Or are they different, i.e. dimensions or diff ratio?

Brown & Gammons Parts List shows no difference between GT and Roadster rear axles. I don't see a problem.

If this includes a conversion from disk to wire wheels, you will need the entire differential unit as the lengths are a little different to account for a diffeence in the location of the brakes between wires and disks. Some suspension mods are also needed. If the 72 is already wire, a swap of the half shafts should work.

Funny you should ask. The wire wheel diff is 2 inches wider than the disc wheel model. I hastily assumed, wrongly I see now that I have checked a schematic for each, that the spring locating plates would be offset by that much. They are not. All of the extra length comes between the plate and the hub housing. You should be fine.
