petrol in the oil

petrol in the oil is damaging i know, but how do i tell if there is any?

As some of you may remember, i am putting a 1981 pick up back on the road after 12 years of standing. i have just serviced the engine, and she then fired up second go! - great, but after a few minutes, the fuel pump (mechanical type) at the back of the engine started to leak onto the floor. after another few minutes of running the leak stopped... i am wondering if the pump is leaking into the crank etc. The oil in the engine is clean, so can barely see it on the stick, let alone if there is any separation of the oil.

Thanks, RS

It is possible for the fuel pump to leak in to the crank case, and if in doubt, then change the pump, the more common cause of fuel in oil is, carb float valve sticking and overfueling ,, or choke sticking on, especially if the car has stood for so long,

The oil level will increase in the sump/G,Box, when you check the dipstick, also check the viscosity of the oil, petrol will thin it down, then there is the heavy fuel smell from oil,

remove pump, re plumb, blank of the hole & fit an electric pump, you can get some electric pumps that need no fuel regulator.

Steve.
