I got an estimate of $400 from a mechanic. It seemed really high to me. Also, he qouted me $95.00 for a tranny oil change with replacement for the oil gasket or whatever it's called.

A tune-up is basically spark plugs and an air filter, which is different than changing the timing belt and things. $95 seems pretty high for changing the tranny oil. I've noticed lots of places like to tell you your trans fluid needs changing even when you just changed it yourself. $95 isn't too out of line if it includes changing the the gasket, but do you need the gasket changed? Probably not.
Parts that were installed years ago (yearly) for a "tune up" are now either non-existant, or done at different mileage intervals ~ there's really no such thing as a "tune up."
If you are doing "preventive" work (there's nothing wrong with the car), check the owner's (maintenance) manual for what is due at what mileage.
If you are doing "corrective" work (the car isn't running right), find a good mechanic/shop, and describe what's wrong ~ they will diagnose and fix it.
Hint ~ the $400 guy may not be the place you want to go...?
Transmission oil can be sucked out the dipstick tube without changing the pan gasket. Doing the job right would include removing and cleaning the pan, and changing the FILTER...... (and the gasket) $95 is a little high in my neck of the woods.
