Adjusting power steering

I was lucky enough to have the chance to drive an example of the "official" URCM car - the Rover 620 ti this weekend.

Found it comfortable and very quick to accelerate, in many ways similar to my old Dedra Turbo but with far less turbo lag and no discernible turbo spool up sound. In fact it hid the fact it was a turbo very well (looked under the bonnet and sure enough, there was a turbo there).

However, the steering has that horrible over-assistedness common to all Honda Rovers. As the power steering pump is operated off a pulley, would it be possible to gear this differently in order to assist the steering less? I found the steering to be the most off-putting thing about the Ti - that and the cheapness of the interior.

Easiest way is to fit a smaller aftermarket steering wheel.

Not for long - it's only a matter of time before the A6 2.5TDI-140 takes that accolade - mwahahahahahahaha :-)

You want the lovely Thema Turbo LE that's on ebay, you do.

All power toys and alcantara interior. Lovely.

Incredibly tempted by one of those.

Yeah - the engine is *easily* the best feature - it's what makes the car nice :)

How fast were you going ?

It is pretty light to steer at low-speed, but once you get motoring, I find it weighs up nicely. It's no lighter than anything else I've driven ?

Yeah, the interior sucks :D

Wasn't looking to buy, just got a go in the Rover. I'm not interested in a Thema unless it's an LS - last of the line model with the 205bhp engine and superior build quality. And anyhow, they aren't as economical as the Ti. (I still have nightmares about the 24mpg I got from my Dedra when I drove like an absolute granny, averaged about 17-19mpg)

The Thema LS does accelerate with such savagery though, something I've not experienced in anything else - they feel a lot faster than the figures suggest.

That said, they are literally safe as houses. My mate crashed one of his into a maestro and a brick wall (at the same time). Maestro (unoccupied) was totally devastated (think concertina) and so was the brick wall. Thema only needed £300 of bodyshop and a new alloy to replace the buckled one from mounting the kerb. There is also a website out there somewhere with a story and pictures of a Thema that had a blowout on a French Autoroute, flipped over and rolled several times, then skidded some distance on its roof. The family of four inside (plus their dog) were unhurt, apart from a few cuts from flying glass.

Rover 600 only gets 1.5 stars NCAP!!!

I can only dream of that sort of economy...

*avoids eBay*

I love Thema Turbo LEs. I know where there's a totally and utterly immaculate one owner one. But he won't sell it. Bastard.
